Apple Tree

I used to rest in its shade
I used to climb into its branches
Plucking the red, ripe fruit from its extremities
Nearly every day

Often, I would gaze at it in the spring
Its pastel blossoms dancing gently in the April breeze
Wafting its subtle perfume through my bedroom window
Filling it with the joy of the summer that is to be

The apple tree
Is no longer with us
Felled by forces unknown
It is but a fading memory

I can't help but remember
The happiness I shared with it in my youth
But the apple tree and my merriment
Are now both long gone

Its once-happy memories
Are now clouded over with despair
I will never forget that cold autumn day
I knew I would never see it again

Lying in the yard
Its branches like outstretched arms
Begging, pleading
As if to say, "Please help me"

Lying helpless amongst its ripened fruit
Which, like their parent, battered and bruised
Knowing they would not have the tree to depend on
For its future existence

The following spring, where the old apple tree once stood
I saw tiny sprouts jutting from the fertile country soil
In the years that followed, they bore blooms of their own
Sweetening the country air with their fragrance

The old apple tree is long gone
But its children are spreading their joy and cheer
Through the springtime
Of my childhood countryside

How I long to once again
See the old apple tree
The tree with which I shared my secrets
My joy, my pain

For although its offspring will bear fruits of their own
They will never replace the original
The one with which I shared my youth
A loss I feel to this day

Apple tree, you are no longer with us
But I think about you often
If you have some happiness that you still can share
Please send it to me.
